Geotechnical Instrumentation

Municon West Coast provides geotechnical instrumentation services for heavy construction operations such as deep excavations, highways, bridges, dams, tunnels, and underpinning works. We offer a wide range of geotechnical instrumentation equipment.

A FEW NOTABLE PROJECTS:

Sutter Health Van Ness Geary Campus

San Francisco, California

This project consists of a new $925M 13-story hospital that required an excavation up to 70 ft in a tight urban environment. Municon performed automated in-place inclinometer monitoring at 19 points during excavation through completion of the ground floor diaphragms. Municon also provided pre- and post-construction photo surveys and vibration and noise monitoring services.

The New Irvington Tunnel

Sunol Valley, California

The $259-million New Irvington Tunnel project consists of the construction of a new 3.5 mile long tunnel with internal diameter of about 8.5 ft. Constructed to deliver drinking water to the Bay Area, the tunnel is 30 to 700 feet underground and crosses two major seismic fault zones. Municon designed an extensive instrumentation system that included inclinometers w/ Sondex settlement systems, vibrating wire piezometers and multi-point borehole extensometers to measure subsurface movements during construction. Municon also provided noise and vibration monitoring services during this exciting and complex project.

San Francisco International Airport

Terminal 1C

The $1.2 billion project includes the construction of an expanded 25-gate terminal that will allow SFO to expand international capacity for bigger jets. The terminal will open in phases in 2019 and 2020. Municon designed and installed an extensive monitoring program that included horizontal in-place inclinometers and tilt meters.

Our equipment is fitted with sensors that allow for remote access for regular reporting and/or website data display. We collect data and generate reports on most of our instrumentation remotely with dataloggers and cellular modems. This allows us to monitor the performance of temporary heavy construction systems in real time. The combination of state-of-the-art equipment and our remote logging capability has enabled us to provide our clients with economical and high quality service.

  • Inclinometers - traversing (manual), datalogged IPI (In Place Inclinometers) and horizontal inclinometer arrays
  • Settlement platforms and Sondex settlement systems
  • Tiltmeters, both electrolytic and MEMs types
  • Piezometers
  • Strain gauges on shoring systems
  • Crack gauges for displacement monitoring
